Dear Family and Friends,
Thank you so much for all the birthday letters, e-mails, packages, cards etc.. How fun! Thank you for everything! It was a great day full of wonderful conference talks, capped off with dinner at Sunraas house. To thank her for all the delicious food, Elder Fowler and I gave her our Opera version of The Spirit of God. It was actually quite moving. We had been practicing in the car. All our dedicated efforts paid off last night. Sunraa got a real kick out of it :)
This week was awesome. We're teaching all the time after combining the two areas and it's way fun! We also picked up a new investigator who I'm excited to go see tonight. Her name is Sokhom. She is older, probably in her 50s and just seems really open to our message. The biggest thing for her is switching from believing in Jesus as just one of the many Buddhist Gods, to believing that He is the God, along with our loving Heavenly Father.
Another Highlight of this week was our lesson with Peter. We taught him the plan of salvation and he was SO excited! We used the cards you gave me mom, and we just laid it out for him. He was fascinated and had so many questions. We suggested maybe looking up some of the Bible verses on the cards to further help answer his questions. He thought that was a great idea and literally ran into his house to grab his Bible. After we had answered most of his questions, we asked him to pray to know if what we had just taught him was true. He said he didn't need to. He was already "certain" it was true. We encouraged him to still pray, and then invited him to come and see conference. He wanted to come to all of it. We told him when it was and he realized his schedule would only allow him to come on Sunday. Peter committed to come, but when Sunday came he didn’t show up at all. Sad.
It was basically the same experience with Chhon as well this week. She committed to come to General Conference on Sunday, however, Sunday came and she didn’t show up, only her ride giver. Honestly, it was very disappointing. We have such high hopes for both Peter and Chhon. Now we need to figure out what to do with them. We've kept them for so long and they just aren't keeping commitments. Because of that, we really should drop them, but I'm also torn especially after President Monson's talk about seeing people for what they CAN BECOME rather than what they are at the moment. We can see a part of what God sees in them and it just makes me want them to progress so bad! Right now we're continuing to seek guidance on what we should do.
Here's some exciting news, one of the people that was from Elder Fowler and Elder Skidmore's area should be getting baptized this Sunday! Her name is Mony, a little Cambodian lady with a cute little baby and husband. She is just amazing! She's so excited about the gospel and has been progressing very well! She came to conference this week and loved it! She's going to be a great member of the church!
I love you all! thanks again for everything!
Elder Hicken
P.S. Nate, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I hope you have a great day!! I'm sorry I wasn't able to get your card to you by today. Just know it's on it's way!
